Young doctors prefer big cities'
KUALA LUMPUR: Most young doctors are known to shy away from postings at hospitals outside the Klang Valley or capital cities, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican. Noting this current trend of preferring to be based in big centres, he said the young doctors were known to appeal against postings outside the big cities.
With this kind of attitude, it was impossible to provide equitable medical service for the Malaysian population, he said.
"Young doctors must, therefore, be ready and capable of adapting to serve in areas needed by the public to create an equal distribution of healthcare.
"It is crucial for future generations of doctors to have greater understanding of the expectations of the rakyat, not only in the city but also nationwide so that the people could enjoy accessible and affordable healthcare to keep them in optimal health.
"Unfortunately, not many of our young doctors today are ready for this challenge due to the fast changing modern and technological society," he said in his keynote address at the inaugural Pre-Medical Student Conference 2010 organised by Kolej Mara Banting at the Prince Court Medical Centre here yesterday.
Dr Ismail's speech was delivered by the Health Ministry's disease control deputy director, Dr Zainal Ariffin Omar.
Quoting examples, the Health D-G said there was still an inequitable distribution of doctors between the rural and urban areas as well as the public and private sectors, where some clinics in Sabah and Sarawak were still manned by medical assistants.

Girlfriends 'exchanged' for drugs
Would you offer a night of passion with your girlfriend (or boyfriend) for drugs? Shockingly, some Malaysian youth in Kelantan did.

These activities have been blamed for the increase in sexual crimes in the northern Malaysian state.
State police deputy chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Mazlan Lazim explained that teenage addicts would make such offers to drug peddlers for their supply of pills.
"Such alarming activity also involved schoolboys aged between 14 and 16, who already had sex with their girlfriends," he said.

Died from inhalant abuse
A CORONER inquiry heard on Wednesday that 42-year-old destitute Kan Siew Kai died in July this year of toluene poisoning caused by glue sniffing.
Toluene is a solvent normally present in substances such as glue and thinner and the court heard that a plastic bag containing a yellowish substance was found in the toilet cubicle of the Chinatown coffee shop where the death occurred. Mr Kan's death was ruled a misadventure by State Coroner Imran Hamid.
While there have been several cases of addicts drowning or falling to the death from buildings after abusing inhalants, death by toluene toxicity is very rare. The last reported case was nearly 10 years ago when Mr Loh You Hwa, a 26-year-old Malaysian, was found dead in the back seat of his car in September 2001, with a plastic container over his head.
Tests by the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) revealed that Mr Loh had abused inhalants that contained toluene and died after breathing too much of it in the enclosed car. His death was also ruled a misadventure.
Investigating officer Yow Kien Seng told the inquiry that in Mr Kan's case, workers of the K88 coffee shop in Banda Street found a toilet cubicle occupied for a suspiciously long time at about 6.40pm on July 11, 2010. When they forced open its door, they found a body on the toilet bowl with one hand on the floor.
Inspector Yow also said that police officers found no identification on the body. However, a fingerprint check revealed that the dead man was Mr Kan. Investigations then revealed that he had a history of inhalant abuse offences that stretched back till 1990 and had been first admitted to the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) a year later for chronic inhalant abuse.

Our future depends on getting the best talents
OUR Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak should be lauded for initiating the formation of Talent Corporation Malaysia Bhd effective Jan 1.
The objective is to attract, recruit, develop and retain local and foreign talents to work in Malaysia with the introduction of a resident pass for highly-skilled expats and spouses who wish to live and work in the country for a period of at least 10 years.
There is a great urgency to ensure our Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) has the right talent with the right knowledge, skill and ability to achieve its desired outcomes.
Billions of dollars are being invested for the 12 New Key Economics Areas and other strategic areas such as bio-technology, ICT and aerospace.
It is recommended that Talent Corp’s board comprises an ethnically-mixed group of local and foreign experts. There will be a greater transfer of knowledge on how the best global companies build a strong managerial talent pool.
The aim is to ensure continuity in the development of our second generation leaders for the future to take up key positions in Government-Linked Companies (GLCs) and the private sector.
Talented leaders want exciting challenges and greater development opportunities. They want to be in a great company with great leaders, and for the work environment to be open, trusting and performance-oriented.
They want substantial wealth creation opportunities and higher salaries, relocation packages, signing bonuses and stock options.
This is the price that Talent Corp needs to pay to attract the best brains to steer Malaysia towards becoming a developed nation by 2020. by(c sathasivam seremban)

kelebihan amalan baik
MORAL :
Jangan abaikan suatu niat baik yg kita mahu lakukan, kerana kita tidak pernah tahu ganjaran yg bakal kita perolehi dari segala kesulitan yg kita hadapi demi melaksanakan niat baik tsbt .

Mum submits to rapist to save daughter’s honour
TO SAVE her child’s honour, a mother became the “sacrificial lamb” to a rapist who, with an accomplice, also robbed the family of RM2,000 in cash and jewellery, Harian Metro reported.
To add to her humiliation, the accomplice recorded his friend’s horrendous act on his cellphone.
The two masked men had stormed into the woman’s house at Kampung Melayu Subang in Selangor at about 4.30am on Thursday, waking the housewife and her 12-year-old daughter from sleep.
Her husband was away at work.
The intruders ransacked the house and managed to gather some cash and jewellery, worth about RM2,000.
Not satisfied with the loot, one of the robbers gave an ultimatum to the victims – one of them must surrender herself to him.
The culprit turned a deaf ear to their pleadings and the mother had no choice but to give in so her child would not be harmed.
The victim made a police report after the robbers fled the scene.
Petaling Jaya police chief Asst Comm Arjunaidi Mohamed said the police was investigating the matter.

Facebook used to recruit girls as 'drug mules': Malaysia
Social networking site Facebook is becoming a hunting ground for recruiting Malaysian girls as drug mules by international syndicates, a senior minister has warned. Malaysia is alarmed that more varsity-age Malaysian girls using Facebook were being lured by drug syndicates' promises of significant
rewards to ferry drugs for them, Deputy Foreign Minister Richard Riot Jaem said. "Most victims are befriended through Facebook. It (Facebook) can be a good friend. But it's also a dangerous friend," Richard said, adding that his ministry had found that most of the victims were befriended by syndicate members of African origin.
He said that syndicates, after befriending their victims, would offer to pay for 'holidays' overseas, usually China, Japan and Latin America, some offering the mules thousands of dollars in pocket money to spend on the trip.
International survey firm TNS last month reported that Malaysians had the most 'friends' on Facebook and spent nine hours daily on an average surfing the profile of more than 500 millions members.
Richard said the drug mule situation was turning "from bad to worse".
He said 785 of 1560 Malaysians arrested overseas since 1991 were drug mules of which 149 were women.
Of those, 70 have been sentenced to death for trafficking of illicit drugs. (press trust of india)

Exercise and protein Is it better to eat it before or after working out?
Having that protein shake right after exercising may help build muscle in both younger and older men, a study says.
What's more, muscle protein increased at nearly the same rate in both young and elderly men.
This suggests that, contrary to some research speculation, older age may not impair the way the body digests and absorbs protein from food, wrote study leader Luc JC van Loon of Maastricht University Medical Centre in the Netherlands.
"Effective dietary approaches are needed to prevent and/or attenuate the age-related loss of muscle mass," van Loon and his colleagues said.
The study, carried in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, included 24 older men with an average age of 74 and 24 young men with an average age of 21, none of whom regularly exercised.
Researchers randomly assigned the men to two groups. In one, the men rested for 90 minutes, followed by 30 minutes of exercise -- pedalling a stationary bike and performing light strengthening exercises. In the other group, the men spent those additional 30 minutes relaxing.
Afterwards, men in both groups drank a solution containing 20 grams of protein, then had their blood levels of various amino acids repeatedly measured.
The researches also took a small sample of tissue from each man's thigh muscle, right before the protein drink and six hours afterward, to measure protein changes in the muscle.
Overall, muscle protein increased to a greater extent in the exercise group than the inactive group, for both older and younger men.
But the study has limitations, such as the small size. In addition, it did not look at actual muscle mass changes over time but only short-term changes in participants' muscle-fibre proteins after the protein drink.
